Studies in Social Justice: Poverty

Description: Why is there so much poverty and inequality in the U.S.? How might they be reduced? Students will examine causes and conditions of poverty through a person-in-environment lens. They will explore both the lived experience of the poor and cultural attitudes toward the poor and poverty. They will trace the history of social policy from the War on Poverty to the War on Welfare and identify the social, political, and economic mechanisms through which the poor are kept poor.Students will propose an intervention designed to address poverty in the local community.
